Please join us in welcoming Chie Jisaka and Emma Gardner to our volunteer team! We are so excited that they will be sharing their skills and passion for contemporary craft with us. Every volunteer is unique and we’d like to invite you to get to know Chie and Emma better in their answers to our fun Q and A below.  Say hello to them next time you come by the Crafthouse our store on Granville Island!

What inspires you to be part of the Craft Council of BC’s volunteer team?

I am really passionate about art, so I wanted an opportunity to be around arts and craft, as well as people who share that passion. I am new to Canada, so I am interested in meeting Canadian artists.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

In New Zealand, I started Maori bone carving. This is something I haven’t had a chance to pursue further, but as I am really interested in Maori design, I would like to continue it sometime.

What is it about craft that you are most passionate about?

I love learning, research and problem solving. I am really passionate about the process of finding ideas, figuring out how those ideas were achieved and then using those ideas for inspiration. When I started teaching myself to sew, I spent hours looking at peoples pictures, watching videos and reading about different parts of the process. I have a very strong eye for detail, so when I get inspired I will sometimes stay up all night working away at a new project. I find the whole process very exciting.

I love what the Craft Council stands for and its aims – I’m excited to be contributing to that. Craft Council of BC gives a lot back to its volunteers and ensures they feel valued and respected.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

Agh, I never know what to write for these questions! I like walking, sunlight and shadows and taking photographs.

What is it about craft that you are most passionate about?

The limitless individuality and expression that can come from it.
