Hailey Gooch

What inspires you to be part of the Craft Council of BC’s team?

I am very inspired to a be a part of the Craft Council of BC team in helping to support the practice of contemporary making and for emphasizing creativity as a means to integrate community.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

In 2012 I rode my bicycle from Vancouver to Mexico with 3 friends where we explored alternative creative practices along the West coast of Canada and the US. We anticipate another 6000km journey in biking across Canada next year!

What is it about craft that you are most passionate about?

I find the practice of craft fascinating with the history behind each individual medium, and the focus involved in being consistently creative with the qualities of each material.

Chloe Sjuberg

What inspires you to be part of the Craft Council of BC’s team?

Growing up on Salt Spring Island, I worked with the Salt Spring Arts Council and was generally surrounded by a lot of art, artists and creative energy in many forms, so local arts and culture are really important to me. I just finished my BA in Human Geography and Communications at Simon Fraser University, which helped me further develop my appreciation for community and culture. I’m excited about working with a new arts community, from the inspiring people to the exciting projects we have planned!

What is it about craft that you are most passionate about?

I’m a very hands-on person. I like experiencing things through touch, like the bark of a tree or a rippling line of silky clothes on a rack. Making and using craft pieces lets us express ourselves and interact with the world in a really tangible way, so the creations that come through craft are very powerful for me.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself?

I’ve been playing around with collage and film photography, and I hope working with the Craft Council of BC will give me inspiration to incorporate more elements of craft into my work. I love making and eating all kinds of food, especially anything Earl Grey flavoured.
