The Craft Council of British Columbia is pleased to announce our Hilde Gerson Award winner- Debra Sloan!

Established by the Craft Council of BC in honour of Hilde Gerson, who was a long time employee of CCBC, textile artist and an enthusiastic craft supporter, this prize is awarded biannually to a craftsperson who has demonstrated excellence, innovation and leadership in the BC craft community – which Debra Sloan certainly has.

To quote Mary Daniels:

“… Debra has been dedicated to clay since the early 1970’s when she first ran Peg’s Place Pottery in Vancouver, scheduling classes, teaching… and managing the studio. … Concurrent with her teaching, Debra has developed a sophisticated body of readily identifiable sculptural work. … Debra has been a tireless volunteer throughout her years as a teacher, student, [historian of BC ceramics,] studio artist, and mother. … She has been a tireless champion of recognizing the importance of recording our past while moving craft forward all the while evolving as an artist…”
