Canada has lost a champion of culture with the passing of Margaret Joan Chalmers on December 2nd 2016. Companion of the Order of Canada (1997), Member of the Order of Ontario (1994) and the recipient of many additional awards and honours, she was a fierce advocate and supporter of the arts. A committed ally, her final wishes were shared in a touching obituary: “Joan would be delighted if her friends, colleagues and co-supporters of Canadian arts and culture would extend her commitment by supporting the arts in this country. In her honour, support an artist, fashion a work of art, sponsor a project, commission a composer, make a donation, join an arts board, dedicate a performance, lend your personal energy to a creative endeavour, make a difference for those who creatively reflect and enhance this great nation.”

On a personal note I had the great pleasure of meeting Joan & her long-time partner Kate Amsbury in her newly renovated home in Rosedale, Toronto – a home that had Canadian craft throughout – from the vents for the hot air return, to the spectacular furnishing – a lady that championed craft in all its forms – she will be missed. – Raine
