Wesley Harris: Mentor & Metalsmith Exhibition
Thursday, July 05, 2018 ― Thursday, August 16, 2018
Mentor & Metalsmith is an exhibition by silversmith, Wesley Harris, in tribute to his teacher, Arthur Brecken. The display contains 23 of Mr. Brecken’s finest silver pieces, 11 of Wesley’s early works directly inspired by his teacher’s, and 39 current and new pieces made in tribute to him. The progression of work both illustrates how Wesley’s style evolved out of Mr. Brecken’s, as well as what influenced the latter’s work.
The items on display are organized into 6 themes and 5 pairings/groupings. The themes are: the Chinese influence; precise soldered construction and cumulative processes; gardens and nature as inspiration; humour; music; and faith. The groupings/pairings are: perfume bottles; spoons; tea services; sculptural rings; and boxes inspired by architecture.
From March 2018 to March 2019, the exhibition will travel to 5 galleries across Canada. A fully illustrated 172-page catalogue will accompany the show and will be available throughout the tour.
