felt :: feutre Canada: SHRINE
Thursday, October 11, 2018 ― Thursday, November 22, 2018
SHRINE is a group exhibition created by felt :: feutre canada members from across Canada. The work asks participating artists to create a portable shrine that pays homage to a belief which is intrinsic to them. This belief can be based in religion, but can also be secular; a testament to an object/theme selected by the feltmaker.
“Shrine-A place regarded as holy because of its associations with a divinity or a sacred person or relic, marked by a building or other construction: A place associated with or containing memorabilia of a particular revered person or thing; A casket containing sacred relics; a reliquary; A niche or enclosure containing a religious statue or other object.”
This exhibition will be the third group exhibition of felt :: feutre Canada and the first not shown in conjunction with our biennial Canadian Felt Symposium. Creativity frequently requires flexibility and knowledge beyond our own realm of expertise. This exhibition’s approach of interdisciplinary will help the craftspeople involved, encouraging creative risk-taking on a larger scale through the inclusion of new disciplines and inviting an innovative merging between craft, multimedia or relational practices. These elements transform craft practice. We are excited to include an interdisciplinary element in this exhibition, as this type of creative stretching opens up new approaches to our members primary medium of feltmaking.
