Ron Bazar was born in Montreal. He first came to Cortes Island in 1984 and moved there full time in 1998. Ron has had a varied career as an entrepreneur, business consultant, writer and publisher. He has been a hobby wood turner on and off since he was 12, making bowls, lamps, and incense holders.
It was while gathering Arbutus wood for a turning project that the idea for the Arbutus Kitchen Collection was born. Ron discovered that the rough pieces of wood were so gorgeous that instead of using the wood as kindling, he made his first letter opener as a gift for his mother. Since then, Ron has been selling in many galleries in Vancouver, Victoria and Banff.
Ron uses only Arbutus wood for his kitchen collection because of its spectacular array of grain colours. Ron selects wood based on the colour and texture. Each piece is finished with food-safe walnut oil which enriches the grain.
