Jie Cynthia Yang
Region: Vancouver Coast & Mountains
Cynthia was born in Yunnan, China. Because of her growing environment, she is fascinated by both nature and traditional culture. She entered Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2015. After her first ceramic course there, Cynthia decided to devote herself into ceramics, which she believes is the best combination of nature and tradition. She thinks life and ceramic are both fragile but permanent, while the unpredictability and diversity of ceramics represent limitless possibilities. With a strong narrative style, Cynthia’s work often combines nature, human figures and animals. She believes narrative works would be better conveyed without the use of language and text. Cynthia doesn’t like to make a clear definition or set up a complete framework for her ceramic sculptures because she wants the viewers to get a unique understanding and concept by seeing her work. In the meantime, she would like her audiences to consider the individual, life and their own relationship with the planet.
