Kaija Rautiainen was born in Finland where she acquired her degree in Textiles Teacher Education from University of Helsinki. She taught textile arts in Finland before moving to Brazil, where she formally studied painting. In 1985 she moved to Canada and established her studio on Granville Island in Vancouver. She has taught weaving in Capilano University and has given numerous talks and workshops on tapestry and weaving. Currently she works on a digital Jacquard loom in her studio in East Vancouver. Rautiainen has exhibited her works internationally including American Tapestry Biennials and Cheongju International Craft Biennial. She is a recipient of the City of Seattle Arts Award and her work can be found in corporate and private collections worldwide.
