Region: Vancouver Coast & Mountains
Wendy grew up near the North Shore Mountains in Vancouver, BC. In those days dogs, cats, children and the odd white duck roamed the streets, parks and beaches – unleashed and unchaperoned. People and animals were personalities of equal importance in that world. Wendy draws on these memories in her work. Wendy is intrigued by the mysterious relationship we have with animals.
She tries to portray the soul or character of her papier-mache subjects.
Wendy studied fine arts at Concordia, UBC and Emily Carr College of Art and has been working in papier mache since 1990. Her sculptures begin with an armature of wire. Newspaper and paper pulp are the basic materials for building the form with various other papers added to the surface. Most pieces are finished with acrylic paints and varnish.
Commissions are accepted for any subject, specializing in animals and portraits of pets as well as the human form.
