Stephanie Symns is a New Zealand-born artist & textile designer.
In 2008, Stephanie began studying Textile Art at Capilano University, following years of making in traditions passed on at an early age from her talented grandmother. She has received grants from the Handweavers Guild of America, and the Textile Society of America.
Stephanie creates functional goods by dyeing, weaving and printing. She also paints and draws and uses her original artwork to develop vibrant patterns for the surface design industry. Her work tends to be colorful and graphic with a wide range of creative influences from 20th century abstraction, the drawing of the Ndbele, doodle art to the pattern and decoration movement. Living in the rainy, gray Pacific Northwest has been an adjustment but has not dampened her bold kiwi aesthetic.
In 2015, she created textile design studio Antipod Workshop and her work has been published in Gray Magazine, Uppercase Magazine and on Design Milk.
