In my textile work, I explore the themes of the sea. I use the Japanese process of shibori including tying and binding, an ancient method that allows areas of the fabric to resist dye. For anemones and other forms of sea life, I use Japanese Gunma silk or hemp and also pina fibre to recreate the delicate and fragile beauty of our living sea.
My teaching experience in fashion and surface design enables me to exchange ideas with students in the making of wearables and accessories. Again, I use shibori-based processes with the layering of dyeing and felting in hand cut wool lacework. Ultimately, my work fuses the aesthetics of east and west with traditional and modern concepts.
