about
Monika Urbaniak is a Canadian artist working at the intersection of fibre and metal. Through material experimentation, she explores themes of memory, absence, loss, and transformation, giving form to the intangible.
Her practice moves between jewellery, textiles, and sculptural forms. Guided by an exploration of materials, each work evolves through a process of making in which meaning emerges, inviting reflection on memory, touch, and the traces we leave behind.
Monika holds a BFA from NSCAD University and an MFA in Craft Media from the Alberta University of the Arts, where she was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally, including at Munich Jewellery Week and New York Jewelry Week. She is based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
artist statement
| Jewellery, textiles, and sculptural objects grow from an exploration of material and process. Fibre and metal meet in surprising ways, where soft and hard materials challenge ideas of strength and fragility. I am drawn to the balance between harmony and tension, where asymmetry, repetition, and texture shape each piece as it evolves. My jewellery offers an intimate scale where material, body, and meaning intersect; textiles extend these relationships into space. For me, making is a way of listening as much as expressing. My work is driven by a search for moments when materials reveal unexpected possibilities I had not imagined. Each work becomes a quiet record of that moment in time. |
