Coral Patola is a POC artist working predominantly in ceramics and sculpture. Currently living on the unceded territory of the Líl̓wat Nation, known as Pemberton BC. Born and raised in Vancouver, Patola went on to earn a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a Major in Illustration, graduating in 2016. Throughout their degree, Patola focused her work by combining their two passions for illustration and clay. Following their studies, they went on to develop a private home-studio and start their small business as Piton Pottery. Continuing to work in utilitarian ceramics and sculpture, Patola has exhibited juried works throughout Canada and the USA. Patola is a proud member of the Potter’s Guild of BC and was part of their collection of juried artists on display at The Gallery of BC Ceramics from 2017 until the gallery’s dissolution. Patola has offered insights into their practice and creative process through published interviews and through CBC radio with Sheryl Mackay.
artist statement
Being a process driven artist, I find importance in the practice of making as well as the final form. The overarching theme of my ceramic and sculptural work is the intention to instil mundane objects and materials with mindfulness and attention. Creating work that inspires people to slow down and appreciate the complexities and interconnectedness of ourselves and the outer world through materiality and form. I hope to create modern heirlooms, capturing the ephemeral presence of nature and nostalgia in physical mementos. I enjoy working collaboratively and creating one-of-a-kind pieces to commemorate milestone moments favouring the utilitarian forms of tableware. Using minimalist design practices and my passion for an earthy, vintage aesthetic I strive to create refined yet quirky pieces that feel like home. At their heart I want my pieces to bring back something simple and good natured.
