Jean L. Kares lives and works in Vancouver, BC. She creates works in textile media, mixed media collage, and assemblage, and participates annually in the Eastside Culture Crawl. Kares received a BA in Studio Art from Western Washington University and an MFA in Asian Art History at UBC, specializing in China. In addition to creating art she teaches courses in Chinese art history and textile history for SFU Continuing Studies.
I often focus on symbolic and broadly spiritual themes in my artwork, with the intention of evoking a resonance in the viewer. My work is mainly surface design – primarily hand dyeing, printing and stitching on fabric – and I particularly value handwork and low tech processes.
