about
Laurie has been creative all her life, introduced to carving at Dogwood Centre 9 years ago. Working in her home studio her hand carvings are playful, whimsical and often inspired by children’s literature and illustrators. She is also inspired to capture natural and local scenery, with a singular focus on a love for trees. Laurie’s pieces are created many times out of bark from fallen riverside cottonwood trees from Northern BC, basswood, cedar, pine, recycled wood, & discarded wooden items that are available and accessible in our everyday lives…She incorporates acrylics, paper clay, metal and found objects to bring interesting shape, shading and natural colour vibrancy into the finishing. All products are non toxic and archival. Some of the work enhances the wood and some defies the medium. It’s all about youthful play and discovery where I am hopeful the outcome inspires and appeals to all.
artist statement
My hand carvings are playful, whimsical and often inspired by children’s literature and illustrators. I am also inspired by local scenery, forest and mountain vistas. My pieces are created many times out of bark from BC cottonwood trees, recycled wood, & discarded wooden items that are available and accessible in our everyday lives…I incorporate woodburning and acrylics to bring shading and natural colour vibrancy into the finishing, and collaborate with other carvers and artists to enhance their work as well. I mentor youth in carving and encourage young artists to pursue their craft. All products are non toxic and archival. Some of my own work enhances the wood and some defy the medium. It’s all about youthful play and discovery where I am hopeful the outcome inspires and appeals to all.
