about

At a very early age, Maaka learned about art and embroidery from her mother, who was a gifted horticulturalist. Maaka spent many happy childhood hours exploring the realms of imagination in the heavenly gardens that her parents created and developed a love for flowers and gardening and a deep connection to nature. This, and her sense of wonder at the beauty of creation are the inspirations for her fiber art work. Maaka creates lush ‘3-dimensional’ floral and garden themed tapestries in rich gemstone-like colors through a mixed-media of fiber art techniques. University level studies as well as 30 years experience in many genres of the arts including watercolor, colored pencil and acrylic guide her in the composition, form and color harmonies while the fiber art medium allows her to create relief far beyond what she could achieve in a painting. As well, Maaka has been gifted with beautiful visions throughout her lifetime and she is passionate about sharing the healing beauty of these inspirations with others.

artist statement

I have a passion for expressing the exquisite textures, subtleties and colors of nature and imbuing each piece with a spiritual light, illuminating the natural world in a way reminiscent of the soft paradisiacal images I have glimpsed through the mists of my mind. In the sacred space that is my own garden paradise – where I commune with the dragonflies, hummingbirds, butterflies and bumblebees – I am nurtured with soft, heavenly images that are healing to the soul. My heart thrills to steal away into my ‘Victorian’ studio to create in a magical realm somewhere between Earth and Heaven, the imagery that has been nourished in my spirit at daybreak in the wet garden. In the creation of my artwork, I go to exceptional expenditures in effort and detail to bring the tapestry to life, as I see it in nature or in my visions.
