artist statement
My name is Marianna Lewis and I am a Jamaican metalsmith, jewellery designer, and contemporary artist. I enjoy working in metal as it combines my artistic side, coming from my mother (an artist, photographer, and interior designer), and my technical side, coming from my father (a mechanical engineer). I find metal a fascinating medium that is seemingly unforgiving, but is actually versatile as it changes from being as hard as a rock, to as soft as butter, through the addition of heat. This allows it to transform into art by technical means. The nature of metal reminds me of human lives as we harden, soften, expand, compress, and change through different lived experiences. My work is inspired by the natural elements of my island home, Jamaica, and my life experiences. I put a bit of myself into every piece I make, giving it a unique story, added value, and profound significance. My aim is to make jewellery that encourages everyone to embrace their distinct allure and beauty everytime they wear my creations.
