about

Sonya Iwasiuk is a contemporary mixed-media artist and educator based in Vancouver, British Columbia, whose work bridges memory, materiality, and place. Her roots trace back to the prairies of Northern Alberta, where childhood explorations of abandoned homesteads first ignited a fascination with forgotten spaces. Those encounters continue to shape her practice, informing an ongoing exploration of history, memory, people, places and stories.
Her artwork has been exhibited throughout British Columbia and Alberta, and she has been jury-selected for art exhibitions and commissioned public art installations. Sonya is also a dedicated educator known for fostering creativity, curiosity, and connection.

artist statement

Much of my work emerges from childhood stories, memory, and a lifelong curiosity about the traces people leave behind. Some narratives are drawn from my own experiences, while others have been entrusted to me through observation, conversation, and shared human experience.
My practice is rooted in exploring the tension between beauty and hardship, resilience and fragility. I am compelled by the ways people endure, adapt, and survive, even in the face of profound loss and uncertainty. Through my work, I seek to illuminate these emotional landscapes and give form to what often feels difficult to articulate.
While the human figure and landscapes frequently anchor my work, I am equally drawn to abandoned spaces, weathered structures, and forgotten environments because they quietly speak of human presence. The disconnected figures and solitary places within my work become carriers of memory, absence, longing, and perseverance. Through ongoing research into histories, places, and lived experiences, I explore how the past continues to reverberate through the present.
I am particularly drawn to landscapes that bear the marks of time, change, and human existence. Travel and exploration continually deepen my understanding of place, connection, and memory. Using layered and experimental processes, I work across a range of materials to create surfaces rich with texture, tension, and atmosphere.
In a culture increasingly shaped by speed, convenience, and fleeting imagery, I hope my work invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and connect through curiosity, empathy, contemplation, and introspection.
