about
Drawing from her experiences in art, craft, and industry, Stefanie Dueck employs traditional metalworking techniques in unconventional ways. Both functional and sculptural works are
driven by process and an experimental spirit. The structural nature of metal has long informed both her technique and aesthetic. Combining welding and standard fabrication methods, with blacksmithing and sheet metal forming, she aim to fuse strength and rigidity with the fluidity of the handmade.
Beginning as a metal major at the Kootenay School of the Arts, in Nelson, BC, Stefanie’s explorations have lead her to an apprenticeship in Southern Spain, a scholarship at the Center for Metal Arts in Pennsylvania, and over a decade of independent practice in Vancouver, BC. Currently residing on the Northern Sunshine Coast, Stefanie continues to create, focusing on her line of hand forged functional objects, sculpture, and custom projects.
artist statement
My approach to metalwork makes little distinction between functional and sculptural pieces. Drawing from my experiences in art, craft, and industry, I employ traditional techniques in unconventional ways. The structural nature of medium informs my technique and aesthetic, combining welding, blacksmithing and sheet metal forming. My aim is to fuse rigidity and strength with the fluidity of the handmade.
