about
Susan grew up in Vancouver but thanks to a cottage on Galiano Island her summers, since infancy, were spent on the southern Gulf Islands. Now living and creating on a small farm in the Cowichan Valley she was able to earn a certificate in blacksmithing through Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University). Weekend workshops on the Island sparked an interest in silversmithing which lead to three winter sessions studying in San Miguel de Allende at Sterling Quest and the Instituto Allende. What followed were three more winter sessions organized by the Pratt Art Center of Seattle for studies abroad. Filigrano, pajarito and amber carving were taught under long time maestros. Susan has been the recipient of three Awards of Excellence from the prestigious Sooke Fine Arts Show.
artist statement
My summers spent on Galiano Island fostered a fascination with seaglass and beach stones. These elements are the focal point of my one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces and I have travelled far and wide to old ocean dump sites to seek out my “gemstones”. Sometimes I get excited by interesting china and showcase their patterns. My work employs traditional metalsmithing techniques and I find the knowledge fascinating. For me there isn’t enough time in the day or room on the bench.
