about

Teresa Kachanoski is a skilled multimedia artist originally from Quebec. Having lived in several provinces across Canada, she now calls the Comox Valley, BC, home. Throughout her life, Teresa has pursued her passion for art while balancing the responsibilities of raising a family. Her artistic journey began in childhood with plein-air painting and drawing. This early love of creativity inspired her to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2005. During her studies, Teresa explored painting, sculpture, and printmaking, broadening her artistic skills and deepening her creative expression. Today, Teresa focuses on felt-making, crafting sculptural and two-dimensional textile art as well as wearable pieces. Using techniques such as wet felting, needle felting, and embroidery, her work reflects her appreciation of the natural world and the richness of her life experiences. Beyond her personal artistic practice, Teresa is deeply committed to supporting the arts community. She has served on the boards of the Society of Northern Alberta Printmakers (SNAP) and the Visual Artists of Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL-CARFAC). Currently, she is the President of the Pearl Ellis Gallery in Comox, an artist-run centre dedicated to fostering and promoting the visual arts in her community.

artist statement

Teresa Kachanoski draws inspiration from her deep connection to the natural world. Her earliest memories of playing and climbing a local weeping willow tree laid the foundation for her imagination and artistic spirit. Teresa’s work reflects the magic and mystery of the environment, capturing the vibrant hues of a sunset or the delicate symmetry of a spider’s web. Known for its whimsy and imagination, Teresa’s art is alive with color and energy. Her creative process begins with a spark—an idea, a color scheme, or a simple sketch—and evolves intuitively into works that often surprise her. Years of practice and training in diverse art media and color theory inform her instincts, allowing her to express herself with authenticity and freedom. Exploring three-dimensional forms is a central challenge in Teresa’s work, one she likens to solving a puzzle. Using wet felting, needle felting, and embroidery, she crafts sculptural and two-dimensional textile pieces infused with playful imagination. This process of discovery and experimentation brings her joy and fosters a connection with her inner child. Teresa’s art invites viewers to step into a world of vibrant whimsy, where the beauty of the natural world and the boundless possibilities of creativity come together.
