the artwork

Last year Barbara Cohen’s exhibition ‘100 Musings’ was a sold-out fundraiser and brought in over $6,000.00 for the Craft Council of BC. This year, Cohen teams up with artist Jenny Judge for another fundraising show. Both artists have individually created and donated new works and have collaborated on some. These new assemblages, that appear to ‘dance on the wall’, promise a colourful and fun exhibition.

Cohen departs from the neutral tones of the ‘musings’ and expands to a more colourful palette. She crafts her textural compositions by laminating burlap, using found and natural objects, crocheting and paint. Together these elements create a lively and lighthearted engagement on the gallery walls.

Judge uses molded and cast objects in her installation work. For this exhibition she focuses on colourful plaster cast elements taken from items such as buttons, thimbles and spools. “To cast an object is to create a memory of an object” says Judge, “I feel as though these assemblages are about repurposing objects and forming new, fun and decorative collections”.

Both well established artists feel strongly about ‘giving back’ and contributing to the gallery’s mandate to support and encourage artistic exploration. All work will be donated and priced well below their market value with a wide range of prices. Since each composition will be made up of several pieces, a template and photo will accompany each work sold so that they can easily be re-hung.

the artists

Dancing on the Wall is a collaborative effort between artists Barbara Cohen and Jenny Judge, who have generously donated their time and work in support of the Craft Council of BC and the craft sector.

Montreal born artist Barbara Cohen attended Sheridan College School of Design in Ontario where she majored in textiles. In 1979 she moved to Vancouver and eventually transitioned to focus on body ornament. Creating jewelry offered an intimacy and commitment to refinement that spoke to her sensibilities. Using materials out of context is a consistent aspect of her work. She has been widely exhibited and published both nationally and internationally, won awards and is included in the permanent collection in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Jenny Judge is a contemporary craft artist who works in glass, ceramic and fibre installation. She holds an MFA from the University of Minnesota, and has exhibited extensively in Canada and abroad. She has curated exhibitions within BC, and has been on numerous exhibition and funding application panels. Her curatorial focus is to expand the perceived boundaries of Craft, and selects artists who offer a fresh and experimental perspective in their work.
