With this collection of embroidered collages, Homa Khosravi reflects on her personal experience of grief, gender, femininity and the relationship shared between human and nature – experiences that are felt in both the mind and body.
Khosravi remembers her mother working with fabric and embroidery, dedicating much of her time and energy to her work. Growing up watching her mother putting her love into her practice has been Khosravi’s biggest inspiration for this collection. Since losing her mother a few years ago to cancer, she has been remembering and embracing her memory through her own work with fabrics and embroidery. Her practice celebrates the presence of her mother and her motherhood, while providing an outlet through which she can express thoughts and emotions relative to her journey with grief. Working with these materials has given her an opportunity to explore her art, and the process of art making, in a different way. It has made her more patient and delicate with the material and objects used in her work. She values the process of art making and the little surprises that come along the way. She has tried to leave her work unfinished or incomplete through the use of layering, inviting the audience to explore and find emotions hidden within the work.
Homa Khosravi, (b. Tehran, Iran) is an MFA candidate at Simon Fraser University. She received her BFA in Painting from the Tehran University of Art. Khosravi’s practice is rooted in a rich history of textile art and traditional Persian painting.
